The Black Page

2014 marked the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Dutch slave trade. In 2013 we commemorated the abolition of slavery 150 years ago. Without shipping, the Transatlantic slave trade would not have existed. The slave trade is therefore part of the maritime story of the Netherlands. As part of the commemoration of the abolition of slavery and the slave trade, the Maritime Museum highlights this turning side of the Golden Age.

In the exhibition you experience life on board the slave ship Leusden. Both the hell for the prisoners below deck and the existence of the crew above deck are discussed.
