World 1 – the Great Discovery

The Great Discovery (1800 – 1850)  is one of the five 'Worlds' within the Railway Museum. This is the place where it all started.

The journey begins in an elevator that not only allows the visitor to "descend" 150 meters, but also takes the visitor back to the year 1800. The room is in reality not an elevator, but a small simulator decorated as a mine elevator. The first engineer in the Netherlands, John Middlemiss, takes the visitor on a journey that starts in a mine shaft. Here the steam engine was discovered to pump groundwater from the mine shafts. The tour continues through an English mining village. Here the visitor can admire the home of George Stephenson (inventor of the steam locomotive) and De Arend (the first steam locomotive in the Netherlands).
