Invaluable – 200 years of Naturalis

August 9, 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of King William I's founding of the National Museum of Natural History. What once started with the king's personal collection grew over two centuries into one of the largest and most authoritative collections in the world. A natural history treasure with no fewer than 42 million objects.

The 25 masterpieces from this collection are on display in the anniversary exhibition Invaluable – 200 years of Naturalis. These special objects can be admired for the first time, or in a long time. These masterpieces and their stories will be displayed for 200 days, and will then take their place again in the collection tower. Objects such as the extinct Cape lion and Darwin's finches together shed light on the impressive history of Naturalis.
