Cartography & Curiosities – The Maritime Museum

The new exhibition in the Maritime Museum Cartography & Curiosa shows how the wider world was discovered from Amsterdam, and how the world came to Amsterdam from the Golden Age. The presentation contains maps by Amsterdam mapmakers from the top collection of cartography of the Maritime Museum. This exhibition shows how our Amsterdam ancestors found their way at sea in the Dutch Golden Age and how their travels determined the worldview. Using the age-old maps, the visitor travels to the locations that shaped Dutch history: South Africa, Indonesia, Japan, Australia and Brazil.

The second part of this presentation is entitled Curiosa: a treasure trove full of eye-catching objects that brought the whole world into the Dutch home during the Golden Age. Here the visitor marvels at wall maps, globes, atlases, travel reports, but also at souvenirs, trinkets and works of art, all of which symbolize the travels from the first part of the exhibition.

The exhibition will be open to visitors on May 10, 2019.
