In the Picture – Van Gogh Museum

How do we present ourselves in today's visual culture? What do we show? What not? The spring exhibition In the Picture tells the story about identity and image, in 75 artist portraits.

A portrait tells more than you initially think. What image did artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch, Charley Toorop and Paul Cézanne want to portray with their portraits? Discover it in the exhibition 'In the Picture'.

In 1889, Vincent van Gogh painted his famous Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear. Vincent shows himself vulnerable and powerful at the same time. It is a portrait in which he unmistakably portrays himself as an artist, in his studio, with an easel. The exhibition shows a top selection of big names and new faces. Vincent van Gogh's self-portraits are brought together with artist portraits by Edvard Munch, Charley Toorop, Gustave Courbet, Paul Cézanne and Helene Schjerfbeck, among others. In addition, modern and contemporary artists such as Francis Bacon and Julian Schnabel also respond to Van Gogh's self-portraits.

The exhibition can be visited from February 21 to May 24, 2020
